Senders

Senders within PureSMS are identified by either an alpha name (e.g. “PureSMS”) or a numeric sender (e.g. “071234123123”).

Alpha names are a maximum of 11 characters long and can’t contain any special characters. In most countries, they’re the recommended way of sending SMS even though replies can’t be accepted. This is because it keeps your brand name front and centre rather than a potentially random phone number.

Sender Verification

Before sending SMS, you need to add the Senders that you wish to use.

Why we verify senders

Most SMS platforms allow you to send from any sender name (within reason) which can open them up to abuse, particularly when anti-spam/fraud measures are not implemented correctly.

In certain countries, the requirement to verify senders (pre-registering them) is enforced by mobile networks within that specific country.

At PureSMS (and by extension, divergent Connect) we aim to be the first thing that businesses think of when the question of a trusted SMS provider comes up.

By verifying sender names in advance for all destinations, we:

• Protect Business Identities, particularly those of our customers and large, highly targetted for fraud, businesses
• Help prevent fraud, scams and abuse
• Lets us guide you on your usage of SMS if required (for example, attempting to send from an alphanumeric name within the US)
• Ensure that our platform is only sending legitimate traffic

Verification Process

When adding a Sender, you’ll be asked to fill out a field containing sample SMS content. This is important as some countries have a distinction between marketing and utility/transactional SMS.

You’ll also be asked for at least 1 country to register the Sender for. If this is a country where Sender registration is required by the networks, we may contact you for more information.

Tip

It’s always best to use a sender name that directly represents your brand. If you’re “ACME Widgets”, “ACMEWidgets” is a great sender name, whereas “Manufacturer” is not and is unlikely to be approved.

Once you’ve submitted this our team will get to work on verifying your Sender. We aim to do this in less than 2 business days, but obviously as quickly as possible.

We’ll be verifying the suitability of the name in accordance with your provided message content, as well as reviewing our internal policies on sender names and any geographic restrictions that may be in place.

How it protects you

If you’re registered on our platform as “ACME Widgets Limited”, and have registered “ACMEWidgets” as your Sender, we would not allow this to be used by another business without your consent.

Further, because of this process, you can increase your trust in the platform to know that we’re doing everything we can to keep not only you, but other businesses and the general public safe from SMS fraud and scams

Banned Sender IDs

When using alpha name senders (for example “PureSMS”) you must be aware of restrictions that are put in place by certain networks that will prevent the delivery of your SMS messages.

Restrictions from networks are particularly strong within the United Kingdom, however we apply the same restrictions globally as part of our Sender Verification process above.

It’s important to note that the list below is not exhaustive, however serve to give you an indication on the measures we take to prevent fraud.

In addition to the below list, we also ban well-known brand names from being registered without the proper authority (think delivery companies such as DHL, Fedex, DPD, or brands such as Apple, Coca Cola, Amazon, etc).

The below generic words, as well as any variations (including prefixes, international spellings, etc) are not permitted to be used as a Sender ID.
