Compliance

Recipients must be able to opt out of your messages, particularly marketing messages. Connect handles this for you with STOP replies, unsubscribe links and a suppression list.

You can manage these settings in PureSMS under Settings → Compliance / Replies.

Every workspace has a suppression list. Messages to a number on the list are not sent, whichever way you send them.

Numbers are added to the list automatically when a recipient replies STOP or uses an unsubscribe link, and you can also add or remove numbers yourself, in PureSMS or with the Suppressions API.

When a recipient replies with exactly STOP, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END, QUIT or STOPALL (in any case), Connect adds their number to your suppression list. This works whether they replied by SMS to a virtual number or through a reply link.

SettingDefaultDescription
Auto-handle STOP messages via the suppressions listOnAdds the number to your suppression list when a STOP reply arrives.
Don’t forward STOP messages to webhooksOffStops STOP replies reaching your webhooks. Only applies while auto-handling is on.

STOP replies are always kept in your message history, whatever these settings are.

An unsubscribe link is a short link added to the end of your message. The recipient taps it and confirms, and their number is added to your suppression list.

Unsubscribe links never expire. The recipient has to confirm on the page, so link previews and security scanners can’t unsubscribe anyone by accident.

Turn on Append a message link to marketing messages to add a link to every message you send with kind set to Marketing. Choose what the link offers with Link mode:

Link modeWhat the recipient can doDefault pre-text
UnsubscribeUnsubscribeStop:
ReplyReply to you (see Replies)Reply:
BothReply or unsubscribeReply / Stop:

You can change the text shown before the link with Pre-text.

Set kind when you send a message to say why you are sending it. This decides whether a link is added:

KindLink added
Transactional (default)Only if you set messageLink.include to true
MarketingWhen Append a message link to marketing messages is on, unless you set messageLink.include to false

"sender": "YourSender",
"recipient": "+447700900123",
"content": "Don't miss 20% off everything this weekend!",
"kind": "Marketing"
}

You can override the link mode and pre-text for a single message with messageLink, for example "messageLink": { "mode": "Unsubscribe" }.
