Email Compliance

Connect handles unsubscribes, bounces and spam complaints for you, and keeps a suppression list so you don’t keep emailing people who can’t or don’t want to receive your email.

Every email you send with kind set to marketing carries an unsubscribe link. Transactional and authentication email never does.

You choose where the link goes:

  • With a placeholder. Put {{ unsubscribe_url }} anywhere in your HTML or plain text content and it is replaced with the link:

    Unsubscribe from these emails
  • Automatically. If your content has no placeholder, we add a short line to the bottom of the email: “Don’t want these emails? Unsubscribe”.

Marketing email also carries the standard unsubscribe headers, so inboxes such as Gmail and Outlook can show their own Unsubscribe button next to your email.

When a recipient unsubscribes, their address is added to your suppression list for marketing email only. They still receive your transactional and authentication email.

Email to an address on your suppression list is not sent. The send is refused with a 400 (“Recipient is on the suppression list.”) and recorded in your history with status set to failed and reason.category set to suppressed, so you can see it happened.

Each email suppression has a scope:

ScopeBlocks
allEvery email to the address
marketingMarketing email only. Transactional and authentication email is still sent
What happenedScope
The email hard bounced (the address doesn’t exist or can’t receive email)all
The recipient marked a marketing email as spammarketing
The recipient marked any other email as spamall
The recipient unsubscribedmarketing

You can also add and remove suppressions yourself with the Suppressions API.

To send to a suppressed address anyway, for example for a legal notice, set bypassSuppressions to true when you send the email.

High bounce and complaint rates harm your sending reputation and can stop your email reaching the inbox. Keep an eye on your deliverability, and:

  • only email people who asked to hear from you
  • send marketing email with kind set to marketing
  • remove addresses that bounce rather than bypassing the suppression list
