Phone Simulator

The Phone Simulator is a set of fake phones that never touch a mobile network. Messages sent to them:

  • are free, as they are never billed and don’t use test credit
  • work before your workspace goes live, from any sender
  • produce real delivery receipts, replies and webhooks, exactly as a real phone would

You can watch the simulated phones receive your messages on the Phone Simulator page in PureSMS.

For a step-by-step test of a whole integration, see Implementing the Full SMS Lifecycle.

Send to these numbers to test each outcome:

NumberNameBehaviour
+447700900001DeliversDelivered about 2 seconds after it is sent
+447700900002FailsFails with error 300 (InvalidDestinationAddress)
+447700900003RepliesDelivered, then replies about 2 seconds later

The Replies handset answers with Reply from the simulator: got "…", quoting the start of your message. If you sent from a virtual number your workspace holds, it replies by SMS. If you sent from a sender name, it replies through the message’s reply link, just as a real recipient would.

For bulk and volume testing there is a range of 100,000 simulated numbers, from +999100000 to +999199999. Country code +999 is not assigned to any country, so these numbers can never belong to a real person.

  • Numbers ending in 99 fail with error 300.
  • Every other number is delivered.
  • Numbers in the range never reply.

Each simulated message is stamped with a mobile network, so delivery receipts carry the same cost fields (CostEur, CostGbp) you would see for that network. You can choose the network on the Phone Simulator page, or pick Random, which gives each number its own fixed network.
